ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Candidates for the Board of Directors of the Arbor Property Owners Association. Get to know the candidates. Please review their qualifications and we will be getting information to you on how to vote. Check the website regularly.

Don Kautz and Carol Ziel spend all the time they can at the "round house" at 726 Harborside Drive.  Our house was finished in 2006.  Don is a nursing professor at UNCG and Carol is an ophthalmologist in Winston Salem. Both have been heavily involved with our homeowners association in Winston for many years. Don knows that the best way to feel a part of the Arbor is to serve on the board here.  We are proud of all the great work the Arbor board has done, and Don would be glad to help continue this work. As a scout leader for many years, Don has a "git r done" attitude. Don's flexible work schedule will permit attending board meetings and being here to work on neighborhood projects.

Mike Zinsmeister and his wife Lisa, son Owen, (3) and Daughter Parker, (2) are in the process of completing their home in The Arbor, expecting to be enjoying it by September of 2011.  After several years of enjoying the community and lake as ‘day visitors’ at their dock, it’s an exciting and rewarding prospect for them.  The Zinsmeister’s purchased the lot on Waters Edge Drive in 2005, and have slowly worked to improve it, preparing to eventually build a lake home for friends and family.  They’re excited to be making that dream a reality.

The Zinsmeister’s live in Asheville, where Mike maintains a satellite office for WideOrbit, a San Francisco based software company who provides solutions that run media companies.  As Vice President of Sales for the past 7 years, Mike has worked to build the company from 50 employees serving 100 stations, to 300 employees serving 2000 stations and networks.  They choose to live in the area based on the balance they’re able to achieve between work and play, with their second home in Arbor representing a large part of that balance.  They’re an avid outdoors family, and you’ll see them out boating, wakeboarding, and hiking the nearby trails.

Prior to moving back to Asheville, Mike & Lisa lived in Decatur, Georgia where Lisa owned two successful restaurants. They had a second home on Lake Arrowhead, a small 600 acre lake community, but retained their lot in The Arbor until they could move back to The Carolinas.   Mike’s interest in serving on the board is an opportunity to contribute to the community that’s such an important part of their life, helping to preserve it and guide it for future generations of our families.

Landscaping The Common Areas

We are very proud of the way The Arbor is looking. We have hired a new landscape company. Both our entrances have been upgraded and our roadways cut back. They have also begun to landscape at our dry boat storage area. Trees line the area to form a natural barrier. We are pleased with the work that Tim Hobson and his crew are doing. They are also available if you need work done on your property. Check out our website for other landscapers as well.

Bill and Connie Topham moved to The Arbor in April 2006, after living in Richmond, Virginia for 30 years.

Bill has always claimed North Carolina as home and is an NC State graduate.  Connie grew up in Pennsylvania but all of her extended family is in Virginia.  Upon college graduation, Connie relocated to Richmond.  Bill’s family was living in the Richmond area at the time and he relocated there when he changed jobs.  They met through Bill’s sister.

Bill worked for Sun Trust Bank for 30 years.  Connie worked as a Speech Pathologist and later as a Director of Christian Education.  Both retired early and decided to pursue their shared dream of living in the mountains of North Carolina and on a lake.  Lake James fit the bill perfectly, as they discovered  while vacationing in WNC.  Now Connie works as a Teacher Assistant at Nebo Elementary School, while Bill remains officially retired.  Connie readily admits that Bill is a wonderful “house husband”.

Bill and Connie have two children, a daughter and son-in-law, and a Cavalier King Charles  Spaniel grandog.  Their eldest, David, lives in Charleston, S.C., and  married Emily there in August of this year.  Their “baby”, Lauren, lives in Charlotte, N.C., with her husband Jason, and has been married three years.  Another grandog seems to be in the picture for this Christmas (a yellow lab this time), but no news of any grandchildren yet.

Bill and Connie spend many hours on the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking and exploring.  Waterfalls, wildflowers, and nature photography are of special interest.  When not hiking, you may find them on their pontoon boat on the lake with family or friends.   In the Arbor, Bill serves as chairman of the Community Docks Committee, and Connie on the Architectural Review Board and Social Planning Committee. They are members of Nebo United Methodist Church.  Quite a few Arbor families have joined this friendly little church.  If you are visiting on a weekend, you might be surprised what a warm welcome and inspiring message you’re likely to encounter.  Please come join us!

The Arbor at Lake James
Rules of Courtesy for the Common Dock Areas

Make sure you neatly coil any line that you are leaving on the dock. This can easily become a tripping hazard if it is not properly coiled and out of the way. If someone falls due to your loose line it will be your fault.

When you leave your boat make sure you turn off all lights and radios. This is a common courtesy for the other boaters around you that may not enjoy your lights or music.

Wait your turn when docking your boat. If there is someone tied to the boat docks don't rush in and cause the dock to move and shake. This could cause them to fall and a few seconds won't hurt you. Don't leave personal belongings on the dock, this includes trash. If you can carry it onto the dock you can carry it away. Always SLOW way down when coming near the common dock area. Treat others as you want to be treated.
